Physical activity fights most chronic diseases that compromise the health of Brazilians

The data are worrying: about 40% of the Brazilian population (equivalent to more than 57 million people) have at least one non-communicable chronic disease (CNCD), according to the National Health Survey (PNS). According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Health, in partnership with the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), these diseases, which involve hypertension, diabetes, spinal problems, cholesterol and depression, are responsible for more than 70% of the deaths in the country. But this game can turn. A few changes in the routine. One is running. That's it! Sport can help prevent and combat virtually all chronic health problems. Check out.

Arterial hypertension

The disease occurs when veins and arteries contract or lose the ability to dilate. This raises resistance to the passage of blood and increases blood pressure. As the vessels of our body are covered internally by a very thin and delicate layer, they can clog or break if the strong flow is constant. Depending on the region where the problem occurs, a person may have heart attack, stroke, kidney failure ... "High blood pressure may have several factors, but most of the time it is the genetics that prevails. Therefore, those who have relatives with the disease need more attention, "says Celso Amodeo, a cardiologist and hypertension specialist at Hospital do Coração (HCor) in São Paulo. In addition to the genetic issue, sedentary individuals who follow an unhealthy menu with a lot of salt and fat intake are also more likely to develop the disease.

Protect yourself from running: Aside from maintaining a balanced diet, regular physical activity is one of the keys to staying away from hypertension. Exercise helps keep weight under control, reduces stress and resting heart rate, factors directly linked to the onset of the disease. "The race still optimizes the action of hormones that control the cardiovascular system. For all this, it promotes a reduction in blood pressure, blood sugar and improves the profile of lipids in the blood (cholesterol and triglycerides), "says Amodeo.

Type 2 diabetes

The disease occurs when insulin (the hormone made in the pancreas) produced by the body becomes insufficient to normalize the concentration of glucose in the bloodstream. "Insulin is responsible for promoting the entry of sugar into the cells," says Renato Zilli, an endocrinologist at the Sírio Libanês Hospital in São Paulo. Type 2 diabetes usually occurs after 30 years of age and is associated with genetics, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle. If left unchecked, the problem can lead to other complications such as heart attack, stroke, changes in vision and nerves. "Many ailments arising from diabetes are among the leading causes of death in the country," warns Zilli.

Protect yourself from running: During exercise, your body uses glucose as fuel, which helps lower blood sugar. In addition, training increases cellular sensitivity to insulin (that is, the body needs less of the hormone to bring the glucose into the cells). "Physical activity has an effect on glucose metabolism for up to 24 hours. Overall, in people with diabetes and blood glucose levels below 300 mg / dL, exercise immediately decreases the sugar level and improves long-term control of the disease, "says Zilli. According to the doctor, the ideal is to perform at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day, five times a week.

High cholesterol

Usually, this change occurs in sedentary people, with diets rich in fatty foods or with a history of family problems. "Maintaining high LDL cholesterol for a long time can trigger cardiovascular disease, stroke, lower limb artery disease, and kidney failure," says Celso Amodeo.

Protect Yourself With Running: Studies show that regular physical training improves the blood lipid profile. That is, it lowers LDL and increases HDL (good cholesterol). "This also has an impact on the reduction of atherosclerosis, with a consequent decrease in cardiovascular risk," adds the cardiologist.

Pains in the Column

The main problem in the back that affects the Brazilians is called low back pain. "This pain may only be a result of a muscle contraction in the lumbar region or indicative of something more serious, such as a herniated disc or misalignment of the vertebrae," says Ana Camila Gandolfi, a neurosurgeon specializing in sports neurosurgery and a columnist at SUA CORRIDA.

The World Health Organization (WHO) believes that at least 80% of the world's population has or will ever have back pain. "The growing sedentary lifestyle and the habit of sitting all day have a significant contribution to the problem," says Ana.

Protect yourself from running: When coupled with healthy eating, jogging fights overweight, one of the factors that contribute considerably to low back pain. It also strengthens the core muscles (formed by the abdomen, the hip and the lumbar), which prevents discomfort in the region. In addition, it promotes feelings of well-being, relaxation and reduced stress, reducing stresses that can lead to back pain. "But it's good to remember that along with running, it's important to do bodybuilding. That's because, only the race is not enough to strengthen the core and the impact of the sport can even aggravate spinal problems, "Ana Camila said.

Depression

It is considered an affective disorder. People with the problem feel very sad for a long period of time and / or for no apparent reason, they do not feel like doing anything, they are disinterested, they suffer with changes in sleep and food ...

The causes for depression can be diverse: relationships, work, family, etc. In addition, there are some factors that can influence how the individual's personality, emotional and historical background in the family. "Currently, about 19% of society has depression and there are no campaigns for treatments and counseling," says Yuri Busin, a psychologist and director of the Center for Mental Health Care - Equilibrium (CASME) in São Paulo.

The problem is very worrying. Over time, depressed people who do not go through treatment can begin to lose what they have conquered and even feel like taking their own way, because they have no more interest or energy to live. "This discouragement, depressed mood, indecision, feelings of fear, insecurity and pessimism will disrupt the daily life of the individual, causing various damages," Busin explains.

Protect yourself with running: "Physical activity increases the production of endorphins. This substance increases the sense of well-being and helps you relax, which minimizes the symptoms of depression. "In addition, sports stimulate social interaction, relationships with people, help make new friends and set goals for the future. That is, the person sees again several new senses for life.
